You aren’t wrong, but I don’t think it was him leading her on quite so much as his mother. And when she’s talking about the presents and picnics, she admits that they weren’t actually presents from him (the only thing he gave her was the hairpin) and that the picnics were when she went to visit him, so not anything he really arranged. He isn’t completely innocent though, since he didn’t try to tell her sooner simply because she looked like Daisy.
I do feel bad for her, since not only will her family go back to ignoring/misusing her, but like you said, no one will court a woman who’s been thrown away by the crown prince. She’ll be in disgrace.

He USED here as a stand-in for Daisy. He could have told her from the very beginning that she reminded him of someone else and made it clear they were friends at best.
It was all round very sh!tty and I hope the story chastises him for it in some meaningful way (and NOT through hurting Daisy or his mom).
